Our History

The genesis of Praygrounds ™ began in the mid 1990s. A friend and former President of the Charlotte Eagles professional Christian soccer club, upon returning from an overseas mission trip saw me at the local YMCA. During our conversation, he that he had thought about us while overseas. He replied that there were no playgrounds in the community where they were working. Our business at that time was the manufacture and sale of playgrounds. He then went on to ask could I imagine what would happen if there was a playground at the local church. He theorized that the playground would attract the children of the community to the church, and there the pastor could then care and witness to both the children and their families. Intrigued by that vision, the seed for Praygrounds ™ was planted.

Around April of 2000, Bruce Wilkinson published a book called the Prayer of Jabez. Having enjoyed Bruce’s teaching for several years, I eagerly purchased and read the book. The book challenges us to read Chronicles 4:10 which was the prayer that Jabez prayed in Biblical times. The verse goes like this:

“Jabez cried out to the God of Israel. Oh, that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory. Keep your hand with me. Keep from sin that I may not cause pain. And God granted him His request.”

Bruce encouraged his readers to pray this prayer for thirty days. I do not know how many days I prayed it. I did put in both on our bathroom mirror as well as on the steering wheel of my vehicle, so I was reminded at least several times during the day to repeat the prayer. I do know I prayed this prayer a lot. I did not know what was about to happen, nor by the way would I be able to tie the events back to praying this prayer until sometime later.
